Cannot create FULLTEXT CATALOG -

Cannot create FULLTEXT CATALOG in SQL Server Express Management Studio (2008, 2012, 2014)

DESCRIPTION:

When trying to create a FULLTEXT CATALOG in SQL Server Express Management Studio, using the Full-Text Indexing Wizard, you may get one or both of the following messages:

“Full-text is not supported on this edition of SQL Server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)"

Cannot load ‘Select or Create Population Schedules’ Full-Text Wizard form.
SQL Server Agent is not supported on this edition of SQL Server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

SOLUTION:

This is a bug in SQL Server Express Management Studio. To workaround this issue create the catalog using DDL commands and then attach the catalog you have created by running

the Full-Text Indexing Wizard.

To create the catalog:

Type the following commands into the query editor window:
USE ;
GO
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG ;
GO

e.g.
USE FD_B32BF72A;
GO
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG FD_B32BF72A_catalog;
GO

then click Execute on the toolbar. In the results window you should see “Command(s) completed successfully.".

To attach the catalog:

Open the tables list for the database to attach to, right click on the table to attach to (for FileDirector it is dbo.FD_Images);
then select Full-TextIndex / Define Full-Text Index. The Full-Text Indexing Wizard will then be displayed;
in the wizard select the unique index for this table (for FileDirector “PK_FD_Images", which is the default value), then click Next;
select the column with the OCR text (for FileDirector select “OCRText"), and click Next;
in “Select Change Tracking" choose Automatically, and click Next;
in “Select Catalog, Index Filegroup and Stoplist" select the Fulltext Catalog that you created earlier, leave the other settings as default, and click Next.

You will see an error message:
Cannot load ‘Select or Create Population Schedules’ Full-Text Wizard form.
SQL Server Agent is not supported on this edition of SQL Server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

IGNORE THIS ERROR MESSAGE and click OK.

in Define Population Schedules click Next, then Finish, the wizard should finish with Success.
